Are Energy Drinks Safe?

Although they're called "energy drinks," some of these high sugar beverages could actually zap you energy. I told LOSE IT! “They seem to give you energy, you feel good, and you’re going up in the roller coaster. But depending on your metabolism, within an hour you could feel like going to sleep on your desk. That roller coaster feeling really wreaks havoc on your blood sugar.”

Besides sugar, some of these drinks also supply stimulants. In some cases, the product label will state the amount of these stimulants it includes. But they could also just be listed in the ingredients, which means you won’t know how much is in there. If you try energy drinks that contain these stimulants, you can pay close attention to how they make you feel. For some people, stimulants give you a bit of a boost, but for others it could make you feel jittery and keep you up at night. You can also talk to your healthcare provider or dietitian for advice.

Oatmeal isn't the only food packed with fiber

"Three tablespoons of almonds provide the same amount of fiber that’s in a bowl of oatmeal, and I don’t know about you, but I eat more than 3 tablespoons of almonds at a sitting," Bonnie Taub-Dix says. "Almonds are also the nut highest in calcium, another nutrient, like fiber, that most of us don’t get enough of. Almonds are also an excellent source of plant protein and heart-healthy fats." Research also shows almonds can boost microflora richness, aiding gut health.

New Research Shows People Who Eat Foods Rich in Omega-3s Live Longer

A variety of foods provide omega-3 fatty acids, but there's no doubt that fish is the richest source. The types of omega-3s found in fish are EPA and DHA, which have powerful health benefits particularly when it comes to heart health and reducing inflammation.

Not a fish lover? The form known as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is found mostly in vegetable oils, flaxseed, walnuts, and dark leafy vegetables, like kale and spinach. The body can change a small amount of ALA into EPA and DHA.

If you're not familiar with the many benefits that they can provide, omega-3 fatty acids also help prevent blood clots, improve blood lipid levels and lower blood pressure and they also may suppress inflammation and may protect against some forms of cancer.
