How to Be 'Unignorable' in Any Interview 🙋🏻‍♀️

Hi Reader!

What if your message could cut through the noise and your words were impossible to ignore?

That’s not just wishful thinking...it’s a skill you can learn. Whether you're prepping for a podcast, stepping onto a stage, or being interviewed on TV, how you show up matters. Confidence, clarity, and credibility aren’t optional, they’re your edge.

That’s why I created the Media Savvy Podcast -- to help you own your voice, sharpen your presence, and turn every media moment into an opportunity.

In this week’s episode, I’m joined by a powerhouse in our field — but this conversation is about more than just her story. It’s packed with strategies you can use to stand out in any interview (even the tough ones). And speaking of big moments... I’ve got one coming up, too.

Next month, I’m giving a major talk at Today’s Dietitian Symposium called: How to Ditch Dietitian Dissatisfaction and Make the Most of Your Career.” (I was shocked to find how many RDs are so unhappy!!)

So this newsletter — and the next — are all about helping you feel more media-savvy, stage-ready, and career-confident.

I appreciate you being here,

Bon

If You Want to Tell a Great Story, Start With the One You’re Living

Even after decades of giving advice about how to eat more mindfully, I recently caught myself in a new habit I never used to have: eating while scrolling, reading, playing word games… basically doing anything but just eating.

It felt harmless — until I realized I wasn’t actually tasting my food. And I definitely wasn’t enjoying it the way I used to.

That aha moment led me to write a new piece for U.S. News & World Report on distracted eating — how it’s different from mindless eating, why it affects your digestion, and how you can bring joy and presence back to your plate.

I even shared my favorite simple trick that made my oatmeal with almond butter and strawberries taste like a brand new recipe. (Spoiler: it has nothing to do with changing the ingredients.)

So the bottom line is: whether you're in front of a camera or sitting down to a meal, presence matters...and the way you show up shapes the story you’re telling.

And hey — come clean… do you eat your meals with a side of screen? 📱🍽️

You Asked, I answered:

Question: "You’re about to give a major presentation to hundreds of people — how do you calm your nerves, stay focused, and show up like the expert you are? And be honest -- do you ever get nervous?"

Answer:

Funny you should ask...your timing is perfect! As we speak I'm prepping for one of the biggest talks of my career at the Today’s Dietitian Symposium, titled: "How to Ditch Dietitian Dissatisfaction and Make the Most of Your Career."

This presentation means a lot to me because it’s not just about media, it’s about meaning. About how embracing visibility, storytelling, and yes, a little self-promotion can completely transform how you feel about your work.

So many dietitians don’t even realize their jobs can feel more fulfilling and that they don’t have to stay stuck, bored, or burned out. I’ll be talking about how to reignite your passion, with media as just one arm of that transformation.

But before I even get on stage, I follow a specific process to keep my nerves at bay and my message on point. Whether you’re presenting to 5 people or 500, here are the steps I use to prep for a high-stakes talk:

Overarching Message: Know Your “Why”. Before anything else — I ask myself: Why does this talk matter? Why me, and why now? Reconnecting with my purpose helps me speak from a place of passion, not pressure.

🎤 My Go-To Steps to Prepare for a Big Presentation

  1. Outline the Takeaways: I write down exactly what I want the audience to walk away with. If they remember nothing else, what are the 2–3 points I want to stick?
  2. Build, Then Trim: I allow myself to draft everything I might say — and then edit it down ruthlessly. Less fluff, more flow. This helps me sound conversational. And yes -- I write the way I speak (run on sentences, not the greatest grammar, and so on. I want to speak from the heart -- it's a presentation...not an article.)
  3. Rehearse with a Twist: I run through the talk several times — out loud, standing up, sometimes even in front of a mirror. I rehearse in chunks, so it doesn’t feel robotic.
  4. Record to Remember: Once I like what I wrote, I record my speech into my phone and then I listen to it over and over again. (Yes, it's a week without audio books and podcasts...but it's worth it.)
  5. Visualize Success I take a moment -- eyes closed --to imagine myself walking on stage confidently, connecting with the audience, and feeling proud after. Visualization is a huge part of my prep.
  6. Prep My Voice and Energy Hydration, rest, warm tea (you know I love my throat coat tea!), and some movement to shake off nerves. If I'm home, I also try to schedule something joyful post-talk.
  7. Pack My Confidence Kit: I have an outfit I feel comfortable and powerful in, a written copy of my speech/notes (event though I try to not speak from behind a podium), lip gloss, and my go-to mantra: You wouldn't have been asked to be here if you didn't have something important to share.

Will you be at the Today's Dietitian Symposium? If so, please say hi. My talk is on Tuesday, May 6th from 3-4PM.
