Media your way: no dancing, no ring lights, no pressure

Hi Reader!

Standing on stage in front of hundreds of dietitians last week was emotional in the best way. These are my people, and we were talking about something that touches so many of us, whether we say it out loud or not: career frustration, burnout, and the feeling that maybe we were meant for something more.

But here’s what I want you to know whether you're a dietitian or not:
It’s never too late to pivot.
You don’t have to leave your day job.
You don’t have to dance on Reels or show your face on camera to work with media.

There are so many ways to share your voice, grow your impact, and be seen for what you actually do. And this week’s podcast episode is all about one of the tools that can help you do just that: trends. (And stay tuned for a podcast coming up that taps into stage fright and how you can morph that feeling into excitement.)

I sat down with trend expert and fellow RDN Shannon Crocker to talk about how to spot the right trends, how to use them and how to stay relevant in a world that moves fast.

More below — including a few media pieces that caught my eye.

And BTW -- welcome new subscribers! I'm so happy you're a part of our BTD Media Makers community!

I appreciate you being here,

Bon

The Spotlight Doesn’t Always Need Your Face

Think media means showing your face on camera or mastering TikTok dance trends? Think again.

You can build a media presence — and even get paid for it — without ever stepping into the spotlight. From voiceovers to writing, hand-in-pan recipe videos to food photography, behind-the-scenes media work is powerful, profitable, and often overlooked. Brands need help with writing social media campaigns for them, they may need your expert opinions on current trends and so much more. Magazines are hiring RDs and qualified health professionals more and more to write credible, newsworthy stories for them.

The key is knowing your strengths and how to package them. Don’t let fear of being on-camera stop you from getting your message out there. Media doesn’t need to look one way...it just needs to look like you.

Your voice, your ideas, and your unique perspective are more than enough. There’s room for all kinds of experts in media — even the ones behind the scenes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You Asked, I answered:

Question: "I'm too afraid to work with media, I'm an introvert! How do I learn the skills I need to get out there? "

Answer:

When I stood at my booth at the Today’s Dietitian Symposium, the above question was the one I heard most often. I was there to talk about "How to Ditch Dietitian Dissatisfaction and Make the Most of Your Career," and to be honest, I'm still blown away by how many dietitians are so unhappy.

And that's why I believe so strongly that now, more than ever, it's time that you started working with media!

But when it comes to working with media, not every dietitian is as excited as I am…
Some are absolutely terrified.
And I get it.

I hear things like:
😟 “I hate how I look on camera.”
😬 “What if I mess up?”
😔 “What if no one wants to hear what I have to say?”
😳 “What if my colleagues judge me?”
😵 “What if I succeed… and it becomes too much?”

These fears are real. But they shouldn’t be the reason your voice stays silent.

Because the reality is that your voice is needed. Your credibility matters. Your story can make a difference in how people take care of themselves.

When I created my course, “How to Work with Media and Make Media Work for You”, it wasn’t to make dietitians famous. (Although, hey… if that’s your thing, let’s go!)

👉 I created it so dietitians could finally feel confident showing up and speaking up.

👉 So we could raise the volume of credible voices in a world full of noise.

👉 So we could step out of the shadows of "influencers" and into the spotlight we earned.

And if I could put this in a neon sign, I would:
The media isn’t just for “media dietitians.” It’s for ANY dietitian who wants to grow their impact, attract more opportunities, and fall in love with their career again.
