Recipes, red wine, gut health + more

Hi Reader!

Get ready -- loaded newsletter ahead...

So I’ve only ordered groceries online three times in my life: twice during the pandemic and once when I moved from the suburbs to the city. While it’s become the norm for many, I still prefer the in-store experience—the smells of fresh produce, the joy of picking the perfect avocado, and yes, the impulse buys! But with online grocery shopping growing every day, there are some important things you should know before you click "add to cart."

This week, I’m diving into:

  • Online Grocery Shopping: How to shop smart and avoid sneaky pitfalls.
  • Is Red Wine Really Healthy? Let's uncork the truth behind the hype.
  • Gut Health: The fascinating connection between your diet and digestion.
  • Plus, my latest podcast episode where I share insider tips to help you live your healthiest (and happiest!) life.
  • I'm also adding links to several stories that featured my Thanksgiving Challah-Day Stuffing. It's a game-changer for sure -- you'll love it!!

As always, I’m here to bring you the info you need to eat better, live better, and maybe sip a little smarter. Let’s dig in!

Sending warmest regards,

Bon

How Your Gut Health Affects Almost Every System In Your Body

I'm sure you've been hearing lots of information about your microbiome, or gut health, but you might be surprised to hear that your gut can influence everything from your mental health and your immune system to your weight and more.

I spoke with EverydayHealth and this is just one topic we talked about: "Resistant starches, in particular, are a type of fiber that are like a banquet for your good gut bacteria,” says Bonnie Taub-Dix, M.A., RDN, CDN, author of Read It Before You Eat It. “These include foods like underripe bananas, beans, chia seeds, some nuts, potatoes, and whole grains such as oats, sorghum and barley.”

This story will provides a wealth of information actionable advice to improve your gut health and reduce your risk of chronic illnesses.

Here are my thoughts as seen in EATING WELL

Is Red Wine Good For You In Any Amount?

We've heard lots of good things about drinking red wine: it could raise HDL (good) cholesterol levels, it contains resveratrol (an antioxidant) and it could relieve stress. But this story takes a closer look at drinking red wine and whether it's something to cheer about.

Even those who support red wine’s health claims say it must be consumed only in moderation to be good for you. But other evidence suggests that the negative effects of red wine may outweigh any benefits.

Buying Groceries Online? Study Finds Grocers Often Don't Display Nutrition Information

Although online grocery shopping has become super popular... it's not for me.

I know that not everyone likes to walk up and down the aisles to find new products and flip packages over, but I love going food shopping. Yes, I'm one of those people and that's why I wrote a whole book on the topic. So you can just imagine how happy I was when I was asked to comment on this subject for HEALTH Magazine.

Here's just some of what we talked about and you'll find the entire story below: “It’s important for anyone to know what’s in their food from a health perspective or just a food preference consideration,” Bonnie Taub-Dix, a registered dietitian and author of “Read It Before You Eat It—Taking You from Label to Table,” told Health. “If someone has high blood pressure or diabetes or any number of nutrition-related medical conditions, reading labels is essential to detect hidden sugars or sources of sodium, just to name a few examples.”

Besides longer-term implications, a lack of information could also lead to acute adverse health events. Unwittingly consuming food allergens could cause dangerous or life-threatening reactions, Taub-Dix said.
