The moment that changed everything (and I almost missed it)
|
Hi Reader! You know those moments that change everything, but you only realize it after they’ve happened? Years ago, a fellow dietitian reached out before her very first TV appearance. She had thousands of followers on Instagram, a brand-new book, and absolutely no clue what to do once those studio lights went on. She was nervous. We spent time walking through everything, from what to wear, to how to deliver her key messages, to what to do when the host throws you a curveball. The segment went so well that she was invited back again. When she called me afterward, she said: “Bonnie, I couldn’t have done that without you. You should really make a business out of this.” At first, I laughed it off. But then it happened again. And then again. Three different people, same exact words. That’s when it hit me: maybe this isn’t just something I’m good at ... maybe it’s something people actually need. That spark became my media training business and a dedicated Instagram account @BTDmedia. Not because I planned it, but because people asked for it. Sometimes your next chapter starts with someone else seeing your gift before you do. I appreciate you being here, Bon P.S. Welcome new subscribers! I’ve coached people with audiences in the hundreds of thousands who freeze as soon as the red light turns on. And I’ve seen dietitians with small followings absolutely sparkle on national TV. ✨ Social media teaches you to perform for a friendly crowd, while TV and traditional media ask you to connect with strangers. It’s a whole different kind of confidence. You can’t edit, filter, or redo. have to trust yourself in real time. When you’re on camera on TV, no one cares about your follower count. That’s why I always say: “You don’t need a million followers to make a media moment matter.” You just need clarity about what you stand for, what story you’re there to tell, and how to guide the conversation where you want it to go. If you’ve ever thought, “I’ll do media when I feel ready,” here’s the wake-up call: doing media is what gets you ready. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You Asked, I answered: Question: "How do I know if I’m ready for media?" Answer: You’re ready when you care more about your message than your nerves. That shift is everything. You’ll never feel 100% confident ... not even the pros do. But when you’re focused on what your audience needs to hear, not how you’ll look or sound, your fear starts to fade. Before any interview, ask yourself: What do I want people to remember when this interview is over? If you can answer that clearly and in one sentence, you’re ready enough. “Media isn’t about perfection — it’s about connection.” Try this: Record yourself answering that question out loud in 30 seconds or less, no notes, no script. Then listen back. You’ll instantly hear where you shine and where you can sharpen. That’s how readiness grows: one short, brave practice round at a time. 🌟 One of the easiest, least expensive ways to get your name in the news and become a valuable resource for media is just a click away: Btdmedia.teachable.tcom/p/media-masterclass 🌟 You'll also get lots of bonuses including a workbook, a media makeup guide, an audio-video handout and a perfect pitch tip sheet.
