3 Media Mistakes People Make (and How to Fix Them)

If you've ever watched a media interview and thought, I could’ve said that better, you’re not alone. Many people (especially dietitians!) step into the media spotlight only to realize that expertise alone isn’t enough—it’s all about how you deliver your message. Here are three common mistakes I see during my media trainings (and how to fix them):

1️⃣ Jargon Overload: You know the science, but your audience doesn’t. Swap complex terms for everyday language. Instead of insulin sensitivity, say how your body processes sugar. Speak like you’re talking to a friend, not defending a thesis.

2️⃣ Lack of Confidence: Whether it’s nerves on camera or overthinking your words, hesitation weakens credibility. Practice short, punchy soundbites (I call them quotable moments) so you can deliver your key message smoothly—even under pressure. Use alliteration, analogies, etc. (listen to my Media Savvy Podcast Episodes 14 and 18 link below).

3️⃣ Not Knowing What to Pitch: If you’re waiting for media to find you, you’re missing opportunities. The best dietitians in media don’t just react to trends—they create them. Pitch timely, relevant ideas that align with what producers and editors need now. (Check out the Media Savvy Podcast Episode 12.)
