You’re a Big Part of My Thanksgiving Gratitude

Hi Reader!

This time of year always brings gratitude into sharper focus. It reminds me how important it is to notice the things that support us daily — the meals we enjoy, the people who ground us, and the small habits that make us feel our best. I try to carry that spirit of appreciation throughout the year.

And today, I want to say how sincerely grateful I am for you. Your trust, your time, and your interest in what I share mean more than you know.

Today's issue brings you stories about baking, bananas and bread (if you put them all together, you'll also find my recipe for my family's fave banana bread!)

Thank you for being part of the Better Than Dieting community. I wish you all a happy, healthy holiday season.

Until next time,

Bon

Baking to destress – recipes with health benefits

Ah yes – one of my favorite “feel-good” stories. Baking isn’t just about calories or sugar (though of course keep an eye there) -- it can be a powerful self-care & stress-reduction practice. Research shows baking engages your senses, gives you focus, a sense of achievement, and even lowers cortisol, heart rate and supports your mood.

I know when I make this recipe -- my family can't wait until I pull it out of the oven! If you try it -- post a phot and tag me @bonnietaubdix. I love to share recipes like this one: https://bonnietaubdix.com/banana-almond-muffins/

Does Adding a Banana to Your Smoothie Make it Less Nutritious?

The short answer is, not really. But there is some research that might be leaning the other way (sort of).

Researchers found that when a banana was blended into a smoothie containing flavanol-rich fruits (like berries), the absorption of those flavanols dropped by about 84% compared to a smoothie without banana.

The likely culprit: bananas contain an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase (PPO), which appears to interfere with the bioavailability of flavan-3-ols (a type of antioxidant) from other fruits.

But: the study was very small (8 participants) so don't ditch bananas yet because:

  • Bananas remain a good source of key nutrients: one medium banana gives around 375 mg of potassium, fiber, and vitamin B6. Potassium is a nutrient most of us are not getting enough of!
  • They contribute their own antioxidants, fiber (including resistant starch in less-ripe bananas which is beneficial for gut health and stabilizing blood sugar) and help make smoothies creamy and satisfying.
  • They're delicious!

The Worst Types of Bread to Eat, According to Health Experts

As much as I adore carbs (and you know I do!), some breads can sit a little heavier on the stomach than others. According to the article, breads made with refined flour, lots of butter, or added sugars — think biscuits, white sandwich bread, croissants, and sugary breakfast pastries — may be more likely to cause bloating or discomfort for people with sensitive digestion.

But here’s the good news: this doesn’t mean you need to give up bread. Choosing options with more fiber, simpler ingredients, or whole grains (or even a good sourdough) can be easier on your stomach while still letting you enjoy your carbs with zero guilt.
