Your biggest media struggles — revealed

Hi Reader!

I recently asked you to share your biggest challenges and wishes when it comes to working with media, and while I may not have gotten hundreds of responses, the ones I did get were pure gold.

What I heard loud and clear:

  • You want to be the expert the media comes to, not constantly chase opportunities.
  • You want confidence — to pitch, to follow through, to put yourself out there.
  • You want clarity — on how to position yourself, frame your insights, and stand out from the crowd.
  • And you want proof that brands should work with professionals, not just influencers.

In other words, you’re craving visibility without burnout — and I get it.

I’m diving into a few of these findings in this week’s Bonnie’s Bites and Q&A columns, where I’ll share quick tips to help you start shifting from pitching to being pursued.

And BTW -- welcome new subscribers! I'm so happy you're a part of our BTD Media Makers community!

I appreciate you being here,

Bon

Bonnie's Sound Bites

From Pitching to Being Pursued: What the Survey Revealed

One response from the survey stopped me in my tracks:

“I’d like to be the expert the media comes to, instead of constantly pitching myself.”

If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re not alone. So many of you want to shift from chasing opportunities to being the go-to source that reporters, producers, and brands reach out to first.

Here are three quick “bites” to help you move closer to that goal:

  1. Position yourself before you pitch. Before you send another email, take a look at your LinkedIn headline, Instagram bio, and website. Do they instantly communicate your expertise? Journalists Google sources before quoting them — make sure what they see supports your credibility at first glance.
  2. Be seen where it matters You don’t have to land the TODAY Show (yet!) to get noticed. Start small and consistent:
  • Share short, digestible insights on LinkedIn or Instagram
  • Post quick “myth vs. fact” takeaways
  • Write a brief blog answering a trending nutrition question

Every little appearance builds your authority and visibility.

3. Leverage what you already have. Each time you are quoted or featured, repurpose it everywhere — LinkedIn, Instagram, newsletters, your website. When others see you featured, it reinforces your credibility and keeps you top-of-mind.

The takeaway? You don’t have to wait for an invitation to become the expert everyone calls on.

I’d love to say it was pure luck that reporters keep coming back to me for quotes ... but it’s not luck. It’s the result of years spent nurturing relationships, showing up consistently, and making myself easy to find and trust.

And here’s the good news: you can do the same. By putting yourself out there strategically and sharing your expertise regularly, you make it easy for the media to see you as the go-to person in your field. That’s how you shift from pitching to being pursued.

You Asked, I answered:

Question: "It feels like the same handful of RDs get featured over and over — how can I stand out and actually get quoted too?"

Answer: You’re not imagining it — there are a few familiar names that seem to appear everywhere. But the real key isn’t chance… it’s strategy.

Here are three ways to make yourself stand out:

  1. Respond quickly ⏱️ Journalists often work on tight deadlines. The faster you reply with a clear, concise quote, the more likely you are to land the spot. Set up Google Alerts or subscribe to media request roundups so you’re among the first to see opportunities.
  2. Lead with a quotable takeaway 📰 Open with a short, memorable line that could be dropped straight into an article. Think magnetic soundbites. Then back it up with one or two sentences of context. Reporters love sources who make their job easier.
  3. Make your expertise visible 🎯 Before quoting anyone, reporters check credibility. Make sure your LinkedIn profile, website, and bio immediately communicate your authority. Think of it as your digital business card for the media.

When you consistently show up, share value, and make journalists’ lives easier, you position yourself as a go-to expert. And that’s when opportunities start finding you.

Scrolling to Scaling: LinkedIn for Media & Business

Have you ever timed yourself to see how much time you spend on Instagram or Facebook, watching videos, liking posts, and comparing yourself to others? It’s easy to get caught up in highlight reels, trends, and the endless loop of content.

But the real goldmine for opportunities, connections, and media success? It’s not there…it’s on LinkedIn—and most of us are barely using it.

In this episode of the Media Savvy Podcast, I talked with Gisela Bouvier, a LinkedIn powerhouse who has turned this so-called “untapped power platform” into a stage for visibility, credibility, and career-changing opportunities.

Gisela shared with Media Savvy listeners how to:
- Build a media-friendly profile that gets noticed
- Connect with journalists, brands, and decision-makers
- Use storytelling (not salesy posts) to grow your brand
- Unlock LinkedIn’s overlooked features to amplify your presence

If you’ve been ignoring LinkedIn—or just don’t know where to start—this conversation is your wake-up call.
